With REMI, I explore how people relate to one another emotionally, and how we, as a society, are increasingly shutting ourselves off from one another. Although we live together and all experience the same basic emotions, we often treat feelings as something private that must remain hidden. REMI depicts a collective of individuals who have shut themselves off from one another, each in their own defined space. At the same time, the work reveals that, despite that distance, they are more alike than they realize.

The washes were done at Denim City Amsterdam, in their sustainable wash lab. They focus on minimizing water use, currently achieving 98% less water consumption than the industry standard. Sustainability is something I find important to incorporate into my work. I believe it should always be part of the process, even when it isn’t the central concept.
The washing process was where I had the most fun. You have to let go of control and let the chemicals do their thing. There’s something exciting about that surrender. It’s also where everything came together, where the work found its deeper meaning. All the washes were inspired by neurological scans; through them, I wanted to bring something of the inside to the outside.
